The Rwanda Revenue Authority is responsible for collecting taxes on behalf of the government. The personal income tax rate stands at 30%. It is collected from individuals and imposed on various income sources, such as pensions, interest, and dividends. Employees and employers contribute 3% and 5% of gross salaries to the national pension fund, respectively, and 2% to the Occupational Hazard Fund.

When expanding your business into Rwanda, understanding the employment laws is crucial to avoid legal issues. Here are some provisions of the employment law you need to know.

  • Employment Contracts. The law requires an employer to offer an employee a written contract that spells out the employment terms. The contract will state the salary, compensation, benefits, and termination requirements.
  • Working Hours. A working week in Rwanda has 40 hours with a maximum of eight hours per day. Overtime is allowed, but employers must compensate workers at a rate of 1.5 times their regular rate of pay.
  • Vacation Days. Employees are entitled to 18 days of paid annual leave, but employees who have worked for more than 12 months are entitled to 24 days of annual leave. Other leave benefits include maternity and paternity leave, as well as sick leave.
  • Termination. Rwanda permits a probation period of up to six months; however, a notice of termination is not required during this phase. Indefinite-term contracts may be terminated for just cause, and the employer must issue a written notice, except if the dismissal is due to serious misconduct.
